The Spirit of Virginia: Photographs from the 1939 New York World's Fair
September 7–October 26, 2012
In the Court of States at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the Virginia Room displayed 227 photographic albums that highlighted various aspects of Virginia life and culture. The Spirit of Virginia: Photographs from the 1939 New York World’s Fair is a UR Downtown exhibition, curated by Hayley Harrington, ’12, that features a selection of 27 images from the historic albums, now in the collection of the Library of Virginia, as well as works by Farm Security Administration photographers Walker Evans and Arthur Rothstein.
This exhibition is in conjunction with a special exhibition at the Harnett Museum of Art, The Social Lens: Photographs by Dorothea Lange and Her Contemporaries, and was made possible by the University's Cultural Affairs Committee and support from the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement and University Museums.
