First Fridays Art Walk
Sept. 7, Oct. 5, and Nov. 2, 5-7 p.m.
Richmond's most popular arts and culture program, First Fridays Art Walk, showcases nearly 40 venues in downtown Richmond. The University and greater Richmond communities are invited to begin each art walk at UR Downtown for refreshments and entertainment. Shuttles will depart from Tyler Haynes Commons at 4:30, 5:10, and 5:30. Return shuttles will depart from UR Downtown at 5, 6, and 7 p.m.
Richmond on Broad Café will be open for First Fridays and offer a special dinner menu.
On Screen/In Person
Monday, Sept. 24, 5:10–9 p.m.
Gen Silent is a documentary that puts a face on what experts call an epidemic: gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender older people so afraid of discrimination by caregivers that many go back into the closet, isolating themselves from their community, friends, and life-long partners. Director Stu Maddux will lead a special discussion at UR Downtown in advance of a special film screening at the Firehouse Theatre Project at 1609 West Broad Street.
The UR Downtown Shuttle departs from Tyler Haynes Commons at 5:10 p.m. Transportation will be provided to the Firehouse Theatre Project and back to campus.
The 2012-13 On Screen/In Person series is presented by the Modlin Center for the Arts in collaboration with the Firehouse Theatre Project and UR Film Studies Program.

Second Street Festival
Saturday, Oct. 6, 1:30–4:30 p.m.
Jackson Ward, once known as the "Harlem of the South," is one of Richmond’s most historic neighborhoods. Join us for a walking tour of Jackson Ward, featuring the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and The Hippodrome Theatre. Following the tour, enjoy the Second Street Festival, famous for great jazz performances and delicious food.

Medicine and the Exploitation of Black Bodies: One Book, One Campus Discussion and Walking Tour
Wednesday, Oct. 17, 4:45–6:15 p.m.
Dr. Shawn Utsey, professor of African American studies and psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, will facilitate a discussion on the themes of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the 2012-13 One Book, One Campus selection, and his film “Until the Well Runs Dry: Medicine and the Exploitation of Black Bodies.” Following the discussion, participants will join Dr. Utsey for a walk to Richmond’s African Burial Ground, located just a few blocks from UR Downtown.

City Council and School Board Meetings
Monday, Nov. 12, 5:10–7:30 p.m.
Following Election Day, see first-hand how a local government operates. On Monday, November 12, UR Downtown and the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement are hosting an excursion to City Hall for the Richmond City Council Meeting, 6-7 p.m., and the School Board Public Hearing, 7-8 p.m.
The UR Downtown Shuttle departs from Tyler Haynes Commons at 5:10 p.m. Join us for dinner and discussion at UR Downtown, followed by a short walk to the City Council Meeting. A return shuttle will depart from City Hall after the School Board Meeting and arrive on campus by 8:30 p.m.
